  • Wrote 8 to 14 articles per week for a weekly community-centered paper. 

  • Reported on community news related to education, health, business, environment and politics. 

  • Created and maintained a COVID-19 dashboard to inform the Watauga County community on COVID-19 metrics. 

POLITICAL EDITOR The Appalachian; Boone, NC (August 2020 – November 2020)

  • Coordinated election coverage for The Appalachian Student Newspaper for the 2020 election. 

  • Reported on vital stories related to election issues in Watauga County related to voting and elections. 

  • Created data visualizations to keep Watauga County voters informed on where early voting sites would be, and how many absentee ballots were requested and accepted leading up to Nov. 3. 

  • Created a weekly podcast and newsletter to give Watauga County voters election information in a variety of formats.


DATA INTERN The Virginian-Pilot; Norfolk, VA (June 2020 – September 2020)

  • Worked directly with various reporters and editors to sort and visualize data in different formats.

  • Partnered with reporters to cover the Hampton Roads area with more in-depth data analysis.

  • Worked on the breaking news desk to cover news in the Hampton Roads in real time.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The Appalachian; Boone, NC (May 2019 – May 2020)

  • Supervised over 50 reporters, photographers, videographers and editors for an award-winning, weekly campus news organization that reaches online, print, and broadcast news consumers in Watauga County, North Carolina.

  • Oversaw and lead a 15-member Editorial Board to produce weekly and daily content for Appalachian State University faculty, staff and students, and the surrounding community.

  • Lead bi-weekly Editorial Board meetings and full staff meetings.

  • Oversaw COVID-19 coverage and implemented Spanish translations pertaining to vital community information.

  • Designed and edited a weekly print publication of 2,500 papers.

INTERN REPORTER The Washington Times, Washington, D.C. (June 2019 – August 2019)

  • Worked as a foreign desk reporter for The Washington Times covering events in Turkey, Pakistan, Venezuela as well as effects of U.S. policy around the world.

  • Wrote approximately 40 articles in an 8-week span on events related to U.S. foreign policy.

  • Gained experience in a professional newsroom working directly under the deputy politics editor.

  • Developed sources and contacts in the Washington, D.C. area with knowledge of U.S. foreign policy.


NEWS EDITOR The Appalachian; Boone, NC (May 2018 – April 2019)

  • Supervised 12 reporters on the News Desk of a weekly, national award-winning student news organization that reaches online, print, and broadcast news consumers in Watauga County.

  • Assigned stories, reviewed drafts, suggested improvements, and set specific deadlines.

  • Also wrote at least two stories each week. Collaborated daily with 16 Editorial Board members to help lead a staff of 50 to 60 writers, reporters, photographers and videographers to publish an online and print newspaper.

  • Created and oversaw reporter beats, increasing news coverage across a campus of 19,000 students, the local community and county.

  • Led bi-weekly desk meetings and workshops to help improve writers’ grammar, reporting, and interviewing skills.

  • Workshop topics also included when and how to properly submit FOIA and public record requests.
